The Buck Lake Area is located five miles east of downtown Tallahassee. The area is wooded, which offers rural, private communities. The residents living in Buck Lake Woods are comprised mostly of upper-middle class families. The average listing price is $130,000, with homes closer to any of the lakes listed around $300,000. Public transportation does not reach this area, so it is necessary to have a car.


The Buck Lake area was established as a subdivision in 1983. The area was meant to convey the quality and taste of southern gentlemen. There had been plans to build neighborhoods around these eastern lakes since 1929, however, the development fell behind due to a slurry of legal suits. By the early 2000’s, the area had only a handful of homes spread throughout the over 600 acre area.

The communities around Buck Lake are small, consisting of several streets. Properties in the area are primarily comprised of spacious, single-family homes. Many residents bought land and built new homes. Buck Lake is the perfect backdrop for any family’s dream home. These areas have become popular for people who desire to live in the city, but away from the areas with more college students.


Buck Lake is located between Buck Lake Road and Mahan Drive east of downtown Tallahassee. This area is just north of Upper Lake Lafayette. The neighborhoods closest to Buck Lake are Buckwood, to the east, and Meadow Hills, to the south. Meadow Hills is separated from the mall and Upper Lake Lafayette by a forest.

The easiest way to reach Buck Lake is by taking East Tennessee Street (Route 90) heading east. This is the perfect location for parents who need to work in Tallahassee, but want to raise their kids in a rural atmosphere.


Buck Lake and the surrounding areas are located within a subtropical climate. This allows the area to experience all four seasons, while the Florida panhandle only experiences two. Spring and fall are both mild and dry. Temperatures in these seasons stay close to 60 degrees fahrenheit. The leaves even change colors in the fall, which is a beautiful sight to see. Summers are the longest season. They include a humid rainy season between the months of June and July. Winters are only three months long. Winter begins in December and lasts until February. Temperatures tend to stay in the low 50’s, so snow is very rare here.


The Buck Lake Area is in the process of expanding the number of surrounding stores. The Fallschase Village Center project began introducing new big-box and small businesses for the convenience of Buck Lake residents. There are also an array of mom-and-pop grocers, pet stores, and retail options if you prefer to support local small businesses. This shopping area is located at the intersection of routes 90 and 319.


Buck Lake residents don’t need to go far for great food. There is a wide range of cuisines to choose from. Buck Lake is less than 20 minutes from the many restaurants downtown Tallahassee has to offer.


Tallahassee residents head downtown for a Saturday night out. The scene here is more casual than that of Miami and other Florida cities. Instead, the city has a smaller, more southern feel. While there are a couple clubs in Tallahassee, most residents frequent pubs and bars offering a dining experience. Whether you are a wine connoisseur, or have disco fever, there is a space that suits your needs.

The residents take full advantage of the long warm season and take in the beauty of nature in the comfort of their own yard.
